The green smoothie saved me. It sounds dramatic, but it’s true. Five years ago, I struggled for energy and was a chronic overeater and caffeine addict who couldn’t get through the afternoon without a nap. Then came the green smoothie revolution

If I could credit any one thing for success in becoming a vibrant, high-energy person, it would be this.

Think Popeye after he downs a can of spinach, and you’ll get the idea.This magical elixir rid me of the constant urge to overeat and the afternoon fatigue which had plagued me for years. I can’t recommend it highly enough. This is powerful stuff!

The Green Smoothie Secret:

What is a green smoothie?

Simply put, it’s raw greens blended with fresh fruit.

You may be thinking… a vegetable smoothie? Gross! But you would be wrong…

Here’s the thing: green smoothies don’t taste like vegetables! They taste like the delicious sweet fruit they’re blended with.

We all know that eating lots of fruits and vegetables is extremely important for our health. We know this as clearly as we know that smoking is bad for us.

The medical profession has been hammering home for decades that we must stop smoking, and we must eat a LOT of fruits and vegetables.

However, eating lots of fresh raw greens is a challenge. We all intend to eat more salads, but actually doing it is difficult. Life gets in the way, and anyway, there’s only so much salad we can chew.

Our small jaws don’t handle roughage well. They’re not adept at breaking down the tough fibers and cellulose of raw plants.

Ever see a cow chew grass? It has that massive jaw and is constantly secreting saliva to break down the fibers of the grass. If you or I were to chew grass, we would barely be able to swallow it. Its fibers are simply too tough to be broken down by our tongues, teeth, and jaws.

By putting greens into a high-speed blender, they get broken down into a form that our bodies can easily digest. And by adding fragrant, sweet fruit, we disguise any unpleasant taste.

Thanks to this magic smoothie, I can now easily consume an entire large bunch of chard, or a full one-pound package of baby spinach, something I would never be able to do if I were only eating a salad. That’s a lot of chewing!

According to Dr. Joel Fuhrman, widely respected physician and author of Eat to Live, every person, to lose unwanted pounds AND greatly improve their health, should be eating at least 1 pound of raw greens per day. This would be hard to do in the form of salads.

I agree with Dr. Fuhrman. I can’t count the number of ways my health has improved since massively increasing my intake of greens in the form of these magic smoothies.

Raw greens are loaded with protein:

Did you know that plants are loaded with protein? It’s true! This is a little tidbit the meat and dairy industries don’t want you to be aware of.

You’ll understand this for yourself when you feel the immediate increase in energy you get after downing a big green smoothie. Again, the only pop culture reference I can use to make sense of this concept for you is Popeye and his big cans of spinach.

Are green smoothies difficult to make on my own?

Not at all! Let me share with you some fabulous green smoothie recipes for kids to help you get started…

Recipe #1:

You will need:

  • 2 big handfuls of raw baby spinach
  • 9 to 10 fresh strawberries
  • 2 room temperature ripe bananas (look for the brown spots!)
  • 2 frozen bananas (simply peel and stick in your freezer before you go to bed at night. In the morning, voila!)
  • 1/4 cup water

Directions:

This will be blended in 3 stages, gradually adding more ingredients with each stage.

  1. Place room-temperature bananas, strawberries and water into a Vita-mix or other powerful blender and blend until smooth.
  2. Add spinach and blend until very smooth.
  3. Add frozen bananas and blend until very, very smooth. There should be no chunks!

It’s ready to drink immediately!

Recipe #2:

You will need:

  • 1/2 fresh pineapple, peel removed, chopped into bite-size pieces
  • 2 oranges, peeled and separated into wedges
  • 7-8 leaves of romaine lettuce, chopped2 frozen bananas (simply peel and stick in your freezer before you go to bed at night. In the morning, voila!)
  • 1/4 cup water

Directions:

This will be blended in 3 stages, gradually adding more ingredients with each stage.

  1. Place the oranges and the water first, then the pineapple, into your Vita-mix or another powerful blender. You may have to stop the blender, remove the pitcher from the base and give it a good shake a couple of times if the pineapple cubes become stuck in the blades. Blend until very smooth.
  2. Add the chopped romaine and blend until very smooth.
  3. Last, add the frozen bananas and blend until extremely smooth. There should be no chunks!

It’s ready to drink!

Recipe #3:

You will need:

  • 2 mangos
  • 1/2 pint of raspberries or blueberries
  • 3 stalks of kale, chopped
  • 1 bag of sunflower sprouts OR 1 head of bok choy, chopped, green leaves only
  • 2 frozen bananas (simply peel and stick in your freezer before you go to bed at night. In the morning, voila!)
  • 1/4 cup water

Directions:

This will be blended in 3 stages, gradually adding more ingredients with each stage.

  1. Add the water, mango flesh and the berries of your choice to your Vita-mix or another powerful blender. Blend until very smooth.
  2. Add the chopped kale and sunflower greens or bok choy to the blender and blend until very smooth.
  3. Last, add the frozen bananas and blend until extremely smooth. There should be no chunks!

It’s ready to drink. Enjoy!

Tips:

  1. Make your green smoothie beforehand, pour it into a thermos and take it to work with you. To this day, I drink a nice big one for lunch while working at my desk. You won’t believe how filling it is! They will keep in your refrigerator for 3 or 4 days.
  2. Have a green smoothie for lunch instead of what you would normally eat. You’ll be surprised how much more energy you have!

These magic smoothies single-handedly killed my addiction to afternoon naps. Now I can power through the afternoon hours and get a lot more accomplished in my day!
